Grant stumbled into his first problem soon after signing with Paramount Pictures. The name Archibald didn't sit well with the local film executives. They both agreed that "Archie just doesn't sound right in America," and Grant added, “It doesn't sound particularly right in Britain, either.”

Grant claimed it helped him draw in more women who wanted to "prove the rumor wrong" rather than rejecting the claims that he was homosexual. It seemed odd that Grant reacted badly to comedian Chevy Chase's casual remark regarding Grant's homosexuality during an interview.

He filed a $10 million defamation lawsuit against Chase, which was settled outside of court with JPMorgan agreeing to pay Grant $1 million as compensation.
