40+ celebrities who starred in cult horror movies
13 Mar 2023It is said that getting a role in horror films is very easy, and therefore many actors use this opportunity to attract the attention of producers. Maybe so. But we cannot deny the fact that it was these actors who made great efforts to make the films with them truly iconic.
1. Robert De Niro, Hide and Seek, 2005
The Hide and Seek actor Robert De Niro is a two-time Academy Award winner who most recently received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Even though Robert De Niro made his cinematic debut back in 1965, he has since continued to make movies. He'd probably like to forget the horror movie Hide & Seek from 2005, which Rotten Tomatoes labeled "derivative, incoherent, and slightly dumb."

2. Renee Zellweger, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, 1995
It defies assumptions that Renee Zellweger would show up in a horror film, but here we are. Another two-time Oscar winner, Zellweger has acted in films like Jerry Maguire, Cold Mountain, and Bridget Jones's Diary.
She also received her first notable part as Jenny in The Next Generation, the sequel to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre—not that one. We don't understand why they felt the need to make a second film when the first became an instant classic. Let's just say that it ought to have remained that way.

3. Mark Wahlberg, The Happening, 2008
The life of Mark Wahlberg has been pretty intriguing and varied. Wahlberg has always been in the news, from serving time in prison for assault to modeling and playing in a boy band.
He has also appeared in countless films, some of which were excellent (The Departed, Lone Survivor), and others which weren't so excellent. The Happening, a film about how earth plants begin to develop a lethal poison that drives people to commit suicide, is one of those subpar films. Seriously.

4. Catherine Zeta-Jones, The Haunting, 1999
The 53-year-old Welsh actress Zeta-Jones has a long list of honors and achievements. She starred in The Mask of Zorro (1998), Entrapment (1999), Chicago (2002), Ocean's Twelve (2004), and Entrapment (1999), for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress (1999).
She did, however, play the lead in The Haunting, a supernatural horror movie about a haunted mansion, early in her career. When it was first released, it received a crushing amount of negative reviews from critics who cited its poor storyline, abuse of horror clichés, and excessive use of CGI effects.

5. Jensen Ackles, My Bloody Valentine 3D, 2009
Ackles, a different actor who appeared in Supernatural, was also a part of the long-running hit television programs Dawson's Creek and Smallville.
Sadly, Ackles also has to mention the ridiculously named My Bloody Valentine 3D on his IMDB page, in which he portrays Tom Hanniger, the movie's lead. Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie a 44% audience rating, proving that 3D movies aren't necessarily superior to traditional 2D ones.

6. Jennifer Lawrence, House at the End of the Street, 2012
Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most well-known actresses in the world right now thanks to the $6 billion that her films have made worldwide. She got an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in Silver Linings Playbook and was the star of The Hunger Games series (2012).
The psychological suspense movie House at the End of the Street follows a mother and her teenage daughter as they move to a new region that was the scene of a terrible crime, yet despite her rising celebrity, she chose to star in it. Despite the film's financial success, critics mostly had negative things to say about it.

7. Ethan Hawke, The Purge, 2013
Unquestionably one of the most well-known actors in the industry, Hawke is also a renowned filmmaker, writer, musician, and actor. His major break came in the 1989 drama Dead Poets Society.
Hawke has been nominated twice for the Academy Awards, in the categories of Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay. Hawke appeared in The Purge, an action-horror movie from 2013 that shows a future America where crime is condoned for one night each year. The film generated $89 million against a $3 million budget, so it wasn't exactly a failure despite the mixed reviews.

8. Sophie Turner, Another Me, 2013
The English actress received praise for her portrayal of a teenage Jean Grey in the X-Men series from 2016 to 2019 as well as her work as Sansa Stark in the popular television series Game of Thrones.
In the 2013 drama-thriller psychological thriller Another Me, she made her feature film debut. Though it only had a 15% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, sadly for her, her career hasn't exactly suffered as a result.

9. Julianne Moore, 6 Souls, 2013
Moore is one of the most active actors in the world and was chosen by Time magazine as one of the 100 most important persons in the world in 2015. She has won two Golden Globes, two Emmy Awards, and an Academy Award.
However, the horror-thriller 6 Souls stands out in her catalog of quality films like a sore thumb, with Rotten Tomatoes aptly stating that Julianne Moore's participation is "the most mind-bending aspect of 6 Souls, the overqualified star wasted on a goofy horror premise that generates more guffaws than scares."

10. Halle Berry, Gothika, 2003
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Halle Berry became well-known for her roles in movies including The Flintstones, Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, and Monster's Ball, for which she received the Academy Award for Best Actress (still the only woman of color to win the award).
Additionally, she starred in the eerie psychological horror thriller Gothika, which, to be completely honest, really frightened me. However, the majority of fans and critics disagreed with me, noting the “preposterous narrative of the movie.”

11. Idris Elba, No Good Deed, 2014
Idris Elba is a talented actor, writer, producer, singer, songwriter, rapper, and DJ. He has played a number of well-known characters, such as Nelson Mandela in the biographical film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and Stringer Bell in the HBO series The Wire.
No Good Deed also stars Elba and Henson, and despite their strong chemistry onscreen, the film's weak premise cannot be overcome.

12. Zooey Deschanel, The Happening, 2008
The Happening by Zooey Deschanel Zooey Deschanel is most known for playing the title character, Jess, in the American comedy New Girl, for which she received three Golden Globe nominations and an Emmy nomination. Deschanel, a talented singer as well, is known for her caustic roles in comedies.
That's why it's a little odd that she and Mark Wahlberg were cast in the horror movie The Happening, which is about poisonous plants that make people crazy. To put things into perspective, the movie's Rotten Tomatoes score was merely 18%. It is very abhorrent.

13. Jennifer Aniston, Leprechaun, 1993
Before Friends, Bruce Almighty, Horrible Bosses, and We're the Millers, there was Leprechaun, starring Jennifer Aniston.
Yes, friends of ours. One of the most well-known persons on the planet, Jennifer Aniston, had her film debut in the 1993 horror-comedy Leprechaun, which is about a disgruntled leprechaun who thinks a family has stolen his pot of gold. Despite being universally derided by critics, six sequels were still produced! Thank goodness Aniston wasn't involved in any of them.

14. Rosamund Pike, The Devil You Know, 2013
А British actress Rosamund Pike's performances in Gone Girl (2014) and A Private War (2018), for which she received nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actress and the Golden Globe for Best Actress, respectively, are undoubtedly her most well-known works.
Pike, who is undoubtedly gifted, had to include The Devil You Know on her resume. Few people are aware of this picture, and those who do are ready to attack it.

15. Ryan Reynolds, The Amityville Horror, 2005
Ryan Reynolds is a Canadian actor and producer who has appeared in numerous films, such as Blade: Trinity (2004), Deadpool (2016), and 6 Underground (2019). He is best known for portraying humorous roles, but like the other stars on our list, he had to complete a rite of passage by working briefly in the horror genre. Reynolds played the title role in The Amityville Horror, a remake of the 1979 horror movie of the same name and based on the Jay Anson novel of the same name. Critics panned the movie and claimed it was a carbon copy of the original.

16. Leighton Meester, The Roommate, 2011

17. Beyonce Knowles, Obsessed, 2009
Even if you're as well-known a star as Beyoncé, there's a reason why musicians stick to their craft. The success of artists as actors has been limited to Justin Timberlake and possibly a few others.
Beyoncé went on to become a household name because of her performances in Dreamgirls and Cadillac Records, but the 2009 psychological thriller Obsessed garnered largely unfavorable reviews despite Beyoncé's mediocre (to put it mildly) performance.

18. Blake Lively, Simon Says, 2006
Lively first gained attention for her role as Serena van der Woodsen in the Gossip Girl television series. Since then, she has starred in a number of films, including The Town, Savages, and The Shallows. In her fourth picture, Simon Says, released in 2006, Lively portrayed Jenny. The horror movie is so awful that hardly anyone has heard of it.

19. Demi Moore, Parasite, 1982
Moore had prominent roles in Ghost, A Few Good Men, Indecent Proposal, and Disclosure in the 1990s, even though she was no longer considered Hollywood's "leading woman" at the time.
The 3-D science fiction horror film Parasite, in which Moore featured, was criticized by critics for having weak writing and unconvincing visual effects.

20. Matthew McConaughey, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, 1994
It's time for Mr. McConaughey to appear, so let's start with that! Before switching to more tragic roles, such as Ron Woodroof in The Dallas Buyers Club, for which he received the Academy Award for Best Actor, the Texan actor first gained notoriety in largely romantic comedies in the early 2000s.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre sequel, in which McConaughey played the bad guy, was his fourth movie, but thankfully for everyone, his career only got better from there.

21. Mila Kunis, American Psycho II: All American Girl, 2002
Mila Kunis is best known to Family Guy viewers as Meg, Peter Griffin's daughter, who she has voiced since 1999. Forgetting Sarah Marshall was her breakthrough performance in 2008, and her performance in the 2010 psychological thriller Black Swan earned her additional praise.
Additionally, Kunis appeared in the dreadfully awful American Psycho II: All American Girl, which was so poor that Kunis later spoke out against the idea of making another sequel. She pleaded with "someone to stop this." 'Purpose a petition'.

22. Drew Barrymore, Scream, 1996
Are we certain Scream qualifies as a failure? The 1996 horror slasher was the highest-grossing slasher movie up to the release of Halloween, earning $173 million globally (2018).
The film has achieved cult status and is recognized for reviving the horror subgenre in the 1990s. So give Barrymore credit for what she did there!

23. George Clooney, Return to Horror High, 1987
Yes, even Hollywood giants have some unresolved acting issues. Everybody must begin somewhere. That skeleton is Return to Horror High for the Academy Award-winning actor, director, producer, and screenplay.
At Return to Horror High, a comedy slasher thriller about a production crew who start to vanish while filming a movie based on an unsolved killing spree that happened in a high school, Clooney finds himself playing Oliver two years after starring as Ace in ER.

One of the highest-paid actresses in the world is Theron, a South African and American producer and actress. She has received many accolades, including the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of criminal Aileen Wuornos in the film Monster (2003).

Butler gained notoriety as King Leonidas in 300, despite giving a strong performance as Erik, The Phantom, in Joel Schumacher's 2004 adaption of the musical The Phantom of the Opera (2007).
He played Burke in Tale of the Mummy during his early career, which was one of many supporting parts he played.

26. Amanda Seyfried, Jennifer's Body, 2009
The 2004 classic (and it is a classic) Mean Girls helped launch the career of the American actress, singer, and model. Later, she was cast as the lead in Mamma Mia!, Solstice (another horror movie), and Les Misérables.
She portrayed a demonically possessed high school girl who kills her male classmates in the 2009 black comedy Jennifer's Body. The movie "fail[s] to be either hilarious or scary enough to satisfy," according to critical acclaim.

30. Paris Hilton, House of Wax, 2005
You do remember Paris Hilton, right? Known for, well, let's move on. She presently works as an entrepreneur, model, singer, DJ, and media figure. In the second movie on this list, House of Wax, Hilton was Padalecki's co-star.
Although she didn't exactly light up the screen in House of Wax and really meets a sticky end herself, Hilton may also be considered an actress. To be fair, there is plenty of blame for the movie's poor quality given the mediocre acting throughout.

31. Amy Adams, Psycho Beach Party, 2000

33. Jared Padalecki, House of Wax, 2005
Probably his most well-known part is that of Sam Winchester in the television series Supernatural, which goes by the full name of Jared Tristan Padalecki. Sam may have made an early 2000s appearance on Gilmore Girls, as keen viewers may have noticed.
He also appeared in the 2009 films Friday the 13th, which was just somewhat better than average, the extremely terrible House of Wax, and Cry Wolf.

34. Paul Rudd, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, 1995
Paul Rudd's portrayal of Ant-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently what makes him most well-known. But during the course of his career, he's appeared in some pretty outstanding films, such as Clueless, Romeo + Juliet, Anchorman, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and Knocked Up.
For a few seasons, he also played a minor character in Friends! Rudd starred in the aforementioned Halloween as well, but this film wasn't quite as successful as his other blockbusters.

35. Lucy Hale, Fear Island, 2009
One of the names on this list that is less well-known is Lucy Hale, who is most known for playing Aria Montgomery in the television series Pretty Little Liars (2010–2017).
Fear Island, a 2009 Canadian mystery-thriller about five students who are being pursued by an unknown person on, you guessed it, an island, featured her in a minor part. That's not good.

36. Finn Wittrock, Luckiest Girl Alive, 2022
Fans of Mila Kunis and Finn Wittrock, who is well-known to viewers from the TV series American Horror Story and the movie The Normal Heart, were pleasantly surprised by the release of the thriller Luckiest Girl Alive in 2022. These actors portrayed a romantic pair who struggled with different issues. It all happened because Finn's serial lover chose to participate in the production of a documentary about the horrific things she saw in high school. By the way, the film is based on the novel of the same name by Jessica Knoll, who also created the script for the movie. The Luckiest Girl Alive was filmed in New York, and since some of the sequences were shot there, some onlookers were probably able to catch a glimpse of the action.

37. Nicole Kidman, The Others, 2001
A house shrouded in mist, where the windows are always tightly curtained... An ominous picture, isn't it? But it is in such a house that the main character of the film, The Others, played by Nicole Kidman, lives. According to the plot, her daughter and son suffer from a strange disease because of which they cannot stand direct daylight, so all rooms must always be in the twilight. The atmosphere of the film becomes even darker after an otherworldly entity appears in the house ... This horror film won eight Goya awards, and many viewers and critics still consider Grace's role in The Others to be one of the best in Nicole Kidman's career.

38. Jon Voight, Anaconda, 1997
In the late 90s, films about anomalous monsters from the world of wildlife were at the peak of popularity. Hence, it is not surprising that the writers of the screenplay opted to create a movie about a huge, ominous anaconda. For filming, two mechanical snakes weighing several tons each were made. The role of the tamer of these snakes went to Jon Voight; he played a poacher, after which he was even nominated for the Golden Raspberry Award. We suspect that the actor was very upset about this because the filming took place in the real Amazon, which was teeming with wild snakes and other dangerous animals, so it was not an easy task.

39. Josh Hartnett, The Faculty, 1998
In the early 2000s, Josh Hartnett was called "horror handsome" because he often starred in popular horror films, one of which was The Faculty (1998). Horror action takes place at Harrington College, where students make a terrible discovery and find out that their teachers are aliens from another planet! The students team up to escape the aliens. The film was very popular with the audience and critics, and Josh was nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor. After that, Josh Hartnett's career took off. The Midnight Meat Train is a 2008 horror film directed by Ryuhei Kitamura based on a novel by Clive Barker. A photographer who is trying to track down a serial killer nicknamed "The Subway Butcher" is the protagonist of the film, played by Bradley Cooper. The movie was originally going to be filmed in New York and Montreal, but due to the high cost of production, Los Angeles was chosen instead. However, filming still cannot be called cheap; after all, the budget was $ 15 million. And what do you think—did producers manage to earn a large amount at the box office? Unfortunately, they amounted to just over $3 million.

41. Jared Leto, Urban Legend, 1998
Urban Legend centers on a series of murders at the fictional Pendleton University. All the victims of the maniac turn out to be acquaintances of a girl named Natalie Simon, who will have to uncover the secret of these crimes. And she was accompanied by a student journalist, played by Jared Leto. Despite the good cast, the film was not particularly liked by critics but was quite popular among the audience. As a result, after 2 years, a sequel to the film was released, which also did not become a cult. However, this did not stop Jared Leto from continuing his acting career and becoming the star of many horror films. According to him, he is ready to play the roles of Morbius and the Joker again, despite the negative reviews from critics and viewers.

The series became so successful and popular that it was immediately renewed for a second season. The main role in the series went to Sarah Paulson, who flawlessly played a ruthless nurse who kept all the patients of a psychiatric clinic at bay. By the way, during the filming of the series in Los Angeles, some madman started shooting! This happened in one of the restaurants in Downtown LA, after which, for security reasons, members of the film crew were locked in the room for several hours. Thank God, no one was hurt.

45. Tom Cruise, Interview with the Vampire, 1994
Interview with the Vampire is a cult mystery drama that received many awards, including two Oscar nominations! The main roles in the film went to the handsome Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise! Great team, right? And if you think that during the filming, the actors were treated like superstars, blowing the dust off them, then you are mistaken. It turns out that while working on the film, the actors were forced to hang upside down for tens of minutes! But why? In the 90s, makeup was not yet at such a high level as it is now, so to create brightly visible veins on the face of "vampires", the actors had to hang upside down - sometimes for more than 30 minutes! These are the sacrifices made by the stars during the filming of horror films.

46. Renée Zellweger, Case 39, 2009
For many, Renée Zellweger is still associated with funny Bridget Jones. However, this actress is very versatile, and her performance in the mystical thriller Case 39 pleasantly surprised many. In the film, Renée played a social worker who was sent to the Sullivan family to make sure their daughter was not abused by her parents. In the course of the story, Zellweger`s heroine finds out that the child is very dangerous! By the way, it was not entirely safe during the filming. On the set of one of the fire scenes, the special effects fire went out of control and burned the entire complex, including the studio stage and almost all the equipment!

47. Anthony Hopkins, The Silence of the Lambs, 1991
In the 90s, the horror film The Silence of the Lambs made a splash! The thriller was the third and, so far, the last film to win the big five Oscars for film, director, actor, actress, and screenplay. In particular, many noted the skill of Anthony Hopkins, who played the cannibal killer Hannibal Lecter in this film. The actor approached the preparation for the role with seriousness and studied the cases of real-life maniacs. From the serial killer Charles Manson, he borrowed the habit of not blinking during a conversation. And it is worth noting that it looked very scary and alarming. Anthony did a perfect job!

Although Sarah Michelle Gellar is most known for her work on the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this talented actress has also appeared in other movies. In the American-Japanese horror movie The Grudge, she gives one of her best performances. Despite having a $10 million budget, the movie made $187.3 million at the box office! The horror film centers on a magical curse that kills victims. 49. Gary Oldman, Bram Stoker's Dracula, 1992
In 1992 was released the movie Dracula, based on the gothic novel by Bram Stoker. This thriller won three Oscars for costumes, sound effects, and make-up, while lead actor Gary Oldman won the Saturn Award for Best Actor. And this is well deserved because Gary tried so hard to get used to the role of Dracula that during preparations for filming, he lived separately from all the actors and slept in a coffin! This is a responsible approach to work! By the way, we want to add that the film about Dracula became so popular that in 1993 a computer game of the same name was released.

50. Jack Nicholson, The Shining, 1980
The Shining, a classic book by Stephen King, served as the inspiration for this movie. The renowned Stanley Kubrick was the director of this scary film. He spoke with Stephen King during making the horror, who tried to convince Stanley not to use Jack Nicholson and suggested using Jon Voight or Michael Moriarty instead. The screenwriter was confident that the audience would be considerably more interested in seeing an actor's steady descent into lunacy than they would be in watching Nicholson, who has a somewhat wild appearance from the very beginning of the film. But this is not the most interesting fact about The Shining. It turns out that the famous scene where blood gushes from behind the doors of the elevators was filmed for a whole year until the director liked the final take!
