13. Child marriages
06 Sep 2023Child marriages still exist in Iraq. Specifically, young boys can marry at the age of 15, and girls at the age of 9. While early marriages are prohibited, they persist and pose a significant issue. The root of the problem lies in parents attempting to alleviate the financial burden of their daughters, as daughters are seen as a liability due to the societal preference for male children. Girls fa ce prejudice, and as they reach a certain age, parents strive to marry them off quickly to provide for them and relieve their financial responsibility. Despite legal restrictions, cultural norms and economic factors continue to contribute to this concerning practice in Iraq.
