It is said that getting a role in horror films is very easy, and therefore many actors use this opportunity to attract the attention of producers. Maybe so. But we cannot deny the fact that it was these actors who made great efforts to make the films with them truly iconic.

1. Robert De Niro, Hide and Seek, 2005

The Hide and Seek actor Robert De Niro is a two-time Academy Award winner who most recently received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Even though Robert De Niro made his cinematic debut back in 1965, he has since continued to make movies. He'd probably like to forget the horror movie Hide & Seek from 2005, which Rotten Tomatoes labeled "derivative, incoherent, and slightly dumb."

2. Renee Zellweger, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, 1995

It defies assumptions that Renee Zellweger would show up in a horror film, but here we are. Another two-time Oscar winner, Zellweger has acted in films like Jerry Maguire, Cold Mountain, and Bridget Jones's Diary.

She also received her first notable part as Jenny in The Next Generation, the sequel to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre—not that one. We don't understand why they felt the need to make a second film when the first became an instant classic. Let's just say that it ought to have remained that way.

3. Mark Wahlberg, The Happening, 2008

The life of Mark Wahlberg has been pretty intriguing and varied. Wahlberg has always been in the news, from serving time in prison for assault to modeling and playing in a boy band.

He has also appeared in countless films, some of which were excellent (The Departed, Lone Survivor), and others which weren't so excellent. The Happening, a film about how earth plants begin to develop a lethal poison that drives people to commit suicide, is one of those subpar films. Seriously.

4. Catherine Zeta-Jones, The Haunting, 1999

The 53-year-old Welsh actress Zeta-Jones has a long list of honors and achievements. She starred in The Mask of Zorro (1998), Entrapment (1999), Chicago (2002), Ocean's Twelve (2004), and Entrapment (1999), for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress (1999).

She did, however, play the lead in The Haunting, a supernatural horror movie about a haunted mansion, early in her career. When it was first released, it received a crushing amount of negative reviews from critics who cited its poor storyline, abuse of horror clichés, and excessive use of CGI effects.

5. Jensen Ackles, My Bloody Valentine 3D, 2009

Ackles, a different actor who appeared in Supernatural, was also a part of the long-running hit television programs Dawson's Creek and Smallville.

Sadly, Ackles also has to mention the ridiculously named My Bloody Valentine 3D on his IMDB page, in which he portrays Tom Hanniger, the movie's lead. Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie a 44% audience rating, proving that 3D movies aren't necessarily superior to traditional 2D ones.

6. Jennifer Lawrence, House at the End of the Street, 2012

Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most well-known actresses in the world right now thanks to the $6 billion that her films have made worldwide. She got an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in Silver Linings Playbook and was the star of The Hunger Games series (2012).

The psychological suspense movie House at the End of the Street follows a mother and her teenage daughter as they move to a new region that was the scene of a terrible crime, yet despite her rising celebrity, she chose to star in it. Despite the film's financial success, critics mostly had negative things to say about it.

7. Ethan Hawke, The Purge, 2013

Unquestionably one of the most well-known actors in the industry, Hawke is also a renowned filmmaker, writer, musician, and actor. His major break came in the 1989 drama Dead Poets Society.

Hawke has been nominated twice for the Academy Awards, in the categories of Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay. Hawke appeared in The Purge, an action-horror movie from 2013 that shows a future America where crime is condoned for one night each year. The film generated $89 million against a $3 million budget, so it wasn't exactly a failure despite the mixed reviews.

8. Sophie Turner, Another Me, 2013

The English actress received praise for her portrayal of a teenage Jean Grey in the X-Men series from 2016 to 2019 as well as her work as Sansa Stark in the popular television series Game of Thrones.

In the 2013 drama-thriller psychological thriller Another Me, she made her feature film debut. Though it only had a 15% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, sadly for her, her career hasn't exactly suffered as a result.

9. Julianne Moore, 6 Souls, 2013

Moore is one of the most active actors in the world and was chosen by Time magazine as one of the 100 most important persons in the world in 2015. She has won two Golden Globes, two Emmy Awards, and an Academy Award.

However, the horror-thriller 6 Souls stands out in her catalog of quality films like a sore thumb, with Rotten Tomatoes aptly stating that Julianne Moore's participation is "the most mind-bending aspect of 6 Souls, the overqualified star wasted on a goofy horror premise that generates more guffaws than scares."

10. Halle Berry, Gothika, 2003

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Halle Berry became well-known for her roles in movies including The Flintstones, Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, and Monster's Ball, for which she received the Academy Award for Best Actress (still the only woman of color to win the award).

Additionally, she starred in the eerie psychological horror thriller Gothika, which, to be completely honest, really frightened me. However, the majority of fans and critics disagreed with me, noting the “preposterous narrative of the movie.”

11. Idris Elba, No Good Deed, 2014

Idris Elba is a talented actor, writer, producer, singer, songwriter, rapper, and DJ. He has played a number of well-known characters, such as Nelson Mandela in the biographical film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and Stringer Bell in the HBO series The Wire.

No Good Deed also stars Elba and Henson, and despite their strong chemistry onscreen, the film's weak premise cannot be overcome.

12. Zooey Deschanel, The Happening, 2008

The Happening by Zooey Deschanel Zooey Deschanel is most known for playing the title character, Jess, in the American comedy New Girl, for which she received three Golden Globe nominations and an Emmy nomination. Deschanel, a talented singer as well, is known for her caustic roles in comedies.

That's why it's a little odd that she and Mark Wahlberg were cast in the horror movie The Happening, which is about poisonous plants that make people crazy. To put things into perspective, the movie's Rotten Tomatoes score was merely 18%. It is very abhorrent.

13. Jennifer Aniston, Leprechaun, 1993

Before Friends, Bruce Almighty, Horrible Bosses, and We're the Millers, there was Leprechaun, starring Jennifer Aniston.

Yes, friends of ours. One of the most well-known persons on the planet, Jennifer Aniston, had her film debut in the 1993 horror-comedy Leprechaun, which is about a disgruntled leprechaun who thinks a family has stolen his pot of gold. Despite being universally derided by critics, six sequels were still produced! Thank goodness Aniston wasn't involved in any of them.

14. Rosamund Pike, The Devil You Know, 2013

А British actress Rosamund Pike's performances in Gone Girl (2014) and A Private War (2018), for which she received nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actress and the Golden Globe for Best Actress, respectively, are undoubtedly her most well-known works.

Ryan Reynolds is a Canadian actor and producer who has appeared in numerous films, such as Blade: Trinity (2004), Deadpool (2016), and 6 Underground (2019). He is best known for portraying humorous roles, but like the other stars on our list, he had to complete a rite of passage by working briefly in the horror genre. Reynolds played the title role in The Amityville Horror, a remake of the 1979 horror movie of the same name and based on the Jay Anson novel of the same name. Critics panned the movie and claimed it was a carbon copy of the original.

16. Leighton Meester, The Roommate, 2011

Meester is an American actress, singer, songwriter, and model best known for playing Blair Waldorf in the television series Gossip Girl. She appeared in a few supporting roles in movies in the middle of the 2000s and has posed for companies like Jimmy Choo and Herbal Essences.

Meester plays Rebecca, a college freshman who develops an obsession with her new roommate, in the 2011 psychological thriller. Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a 4% approval rating, which tells you everything you need to know about it.

Even if you're as well-known a star as Beyoncé, there's a reason why musicians stick to their craft. The success of artists as actors has been limited to Justin Timberlake and possibly a few others.

Beyoncé went on to become a household name because of her performances in Dreamgirls and Cadillac Records, but the 2009 psychological thriller Obsessed garnered largely unfavorable reviews despite Beyoncé's mediocre (to put it mildly) performance.

18. Blake Lively, Simon Says, 2006

Lively first gained attention for her role as Serena van der Woodsen in the Gossip Girl television series. Moore had prominent roles in Ghost, A Few Good Men, Indecent Proposal, and Disclosure in the 1990s, even though she was no longer considered Hollywood's "leading woman" at the time.

Mila Kunis is best known to Family Guy viewers as Meg, Peter Griffin's daughter, who she has voiced since 1999. Forgetting Sarah Marshall was her breakthrough performance in 2008, and her performance in the 2010 psychological thriller Black Swan earned her additional praise.

Paul Rudd's portrayal of Ant-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently what makes him most well-known. But during the course of his career, he's appeared in some pretty outstanding films, such as Clueless, Romeo + Juliet, Anchorman, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and Knocked Up.

One of the names on this list that is less well-known is Lucy Hale, who is most known for playing Aria Montgomery in the television series Pretty Little Liars (2010–2017).

Fans of Mila Kunis and Finn Wittrock, who is well-known to viewers from the TV series American Horror Story and the movie The Normal Heart, were pleasantly surprised by the release of the thriller Luckiest Girl Alive in 2022. These actors portrayed a romantic pair who struggled with different issues. It all happened because Finn's serial lover chose to participate in the production of a documentary about the horrific things she saw in high school. By the way, the film is based on the novel of the same name by Jessica Knoll, who also created the script for the movie. The Luckiest Girl Alive was filmed in New York, and since some of the sequences were shot there, some onlookers were probably able to catch a glimpse of the action.

A house shrouded in mist, where the windows are always tightly curtained... An ominous picture, isn't it? But it is in such a house that the main character of the film, The Others, played by Nicole Kidman, lives. According to the plot, her daughter and son suffer from a strange disease because of which they cannot stand direct daylight, so all rooms must always be in the twilight. The atmosphere of the film becomes even darker after an otherworldly entity appears in the house ... This horror film won eight Goya awards, and many viewers and critics still consider Grace's role in The Others to be one of the best in Nicole Kidman's career.

38. Jon Voight, Anaconda, 1997

In the late 90s, films about anomalous monsters from the world of wildlife were at the peak of popularity. Hence, it is not surprising that the writers of the screenplay opted to create a movie about a huge, ominous anaconda. For filming, two mechanical snakes weighing several tons each were made. The role of the tamer of these snakes went to Jon Voight; he played a poacher, after which he was even nominated for the Golden Raspberry Award. We suspect that the actor was very upset about this because the filming took place in the real Amazon, which was teeming with wild snakes and other dangerous animals, so it was not an easy task.

39. Josh Hartnett, The Faculty, 1998

In the early 2000s, Josh Hartnett was called "horror handsome" because he often starred in popular horror films, one of which was The Faculty (1998). Horror action takes place at Harrington College, where students make a terrible discovery and find out that their teachers are aliens from another planet! The students team up to escape the aliens. The film was very popular with the audience and critics, and Josh was nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor. After that, Josh Hartnett's career took off.
