50 pop culture references that show how memory tricks can be used against us
13 Mar 2023In recent decades, many phenomena related to distorted perception of information have appeared. One of them is the Mandela effect. Although there are many possible explanations for these shared false memories and it is hard to dismiss the possibility that there is something unusual at play. Here are 50 pop culture references you might not remember.
1. Mr. Monopoly
Thanks to Monopoly, we have all learned as children the unfairness of playing board games with family for quite a few generations. So it stands to reason that everyone knows exactly how the Monopoly Man appears. Wrong!
Rich Uncle Pennybags, the real name of the Monopoly Man, is not wearing a monocle. People might have confused Mr. Monopoly with the dapper Mr. Peanut, who does wear a sophisticated monocle, which could account for the confusion. Both have undoubtedly evolved into status symbols.

2. Stay Awake
The Looney Group, Bugs Bunny, and Daffy Duck are among the most adored cartoon characters in American animation history. In 1930, Warner Brothers debuted their own rendition with the Looney Tunes and the show, drawing inspiration from Disney's musical shorts.
Because they are cartoon characters, most people mistakenly pronounce their name as "Looney Toons," but the program and company are officially called "Looney Tunes," a nod to its musical roots.
3. Suspend Your Skepticism
False memory appears to have a slight obsession with the appearance of beloved cartoon characters; it appears that people frequently differ in how they recall the attire of these characters. Do you recall if the original Mickey Mouse's famous shorts were held up by suspenders?
If you answered yes, you are... mistaken! Okay, perhaps not in such a spectacular way. Mickey the original does not wear suspenders. However, in the little animation Clock Cleaners, he does wear them with his long-legged pants. That certainly explains it.
4. Pikachu and his tail
Every child who lived during the 1990s desired to "catch 'em all," or all of the Pokémon. Pikachu, the yellow squirrel, was of course the pride of every Pokémon collection. He was without a doubt every kid's favorite because of his tender cheeks and strong thunder. But was there a black mark on his tail or not?
In actuality, the base of his tail does have a tiny brown pattern. So why do people have varied memories? According to some, the fact that he does have black on his ears may have led some observers to believe he also had a tail with a black tip.
5. Who is your father?
Before Disney acquired the rights to this space opera, many fans had a soft spot in their hearts for Star Wars. It's just one of those film series that has managed to irrevocably alter the medium of film. Of course, having a lot of quotes helps. Beware of spoilers!
It all came down to a single, earth-shattering remark in one of the most astonishing movie revelations ever. One of the most frequently cited quotes from The Empire Strikes Back comes from this exchange between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader.
@Darth Vader vs Luke Skywalker [4k UltraHD] - Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Fight Scene (1/2)/Collective Culture/YouTube.com
6. Revelation of Darth Vader
Why then do so many people have the wrong impression about it? No mention of Luke is made when Vader states, "No, I am your father," in the movie. Despite the numerous parodies and cultural allusions to it, nobody remembers it that way.
You would assume that more people would recall the correct sentence if the movie were this well-known and famous. We do concur, however, that changing the word "no" to "Luke" makes the sentence far more quotable because everyone will immediately recognize who characters we are referring to.
7. No longer in Kansas
One of the most innovative movies of its era, The Wizard of Oz is still regarded as one of the best movies ever created. In this wonderful new universe, Judi Garland truly shone as little Dorothy, and she will always be recognized as one of the most cited figures in movie history.
One of the movie's most well-known quotes is spoken by Dorothy when she first sets foot in Oz. But exactly how does that line go? I don't think we're in Kansas anymore, Toto," or "Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore," seems to be the phrase that a lot of people can't seem to recall.

8. Home is the Best Place to Be
Even though the two phrases are somewhat similar, it's astonishing that so many people still remember the memorable statement incorrectly. Which one do you now recall? Since Dorothy actually has a sense that she is extremely far from home, despite not thinking it.
Perhaps many simply forgot what the line was because they were preoccupied with one of the first major successes of technicolor, a technique for turning black-and-white movies into color. They may have simply been too preoccupied with the flying monkeys and the wicked green witch.

9. Go Scooby-Doo!
One of our favorite cartoon characters from our childhood is the Scooby Gang from Scooby Doo. That implies that we are all familiar with the characters' features. Evidently not everyone, though. Some people don't seem to be able to recall whether Shaggy has a protruding Adam's apple or not.
His neck is actually softer than a baby's bottom. We really have a few hypotheses of our own regarding this one. Maybe it's the angle of his chin that gives him the appearance of having an Adam's apple, or maybe it's because he's gulping with terror all the time. Which do you believe it to be?

10. We Are the Champions…
Due to the fact that their music was both ground-breaking and adored at the same time, Queen has been hailed as one of the most influential bands in recent memory. With its distinctive sound, the band—which included Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon—completely reshaped the history of music.
Although they have many incredible successes throughout the years, "We Are the Champions" has to be a particular fan favorite. However, there seems to be some debate as to whether Freddy sang "of the world" at the conclusion of the song or not.
11. From the globe!
This one actually has a very sensible justification. Mercury sings, "No time for losers, 'for we are the champions," letting the lyrics linger in the air as the official track comes to an end. But he did end on "of the world" during a few of his live performances.
That is why many people recall it in that manner. However, even if we don't fully recall the lyrics, "nothing really matters, everybody can see" that we're going to keep rocking out to Queen's countless rock songs.
12. Shazaam features Sinbad
It seems as though genies were somewhat of a peculiar fixation in the 1990s. Maybe it was because Disney's Aladdin was so well-liked, or maybe it was just that people were so intrigued by these fabled Middle Eastern creatures. In any case, everyone is familiar with the beloved movie Shazaam, in which comedian Sinbad stars.
The issue is, that the movie didn't exist! It appears that people still recall the first film. Shaquille O'Neil's role in the Shaquille O'Neil-starring film Kazaam, along with the fact that Sinbad once appeared on TV in an outfit resembling a genie, resulted in an entirely fictional film!

13. Neighborhood of Mr. Rogers
We've all yearned to move into the most morally upright neighborhood on television and live with Mr. Rogers. The program, which was a favorite of many of us as children, broadcast 912 episodes between 1968 and 2001. (including several specials).
However, the majority of people aren't even familiar with the song's lyrics! Due to its popularity, viewers of all ages saw the show, even though it may have been intended for youngsters between the ages of two and five, so they ought to have recalled the songs.
@The Audio Of Bob Ross And Fred Rogers Drawing A Picture/Bob Ross The Joy Of Painting/YouTube.com
14. A genuinely lovely day
Fortunately, you don't actually need to know the lyrics to his song to honor Mr. Rogers; all you need to do is strive to be the greatest person you can be. Because that is ultimately what Fred Rogers attempted to instill in us through his show.
The biographical drama starring Tom Hanks about Rogers' life was titled It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood in 2019 due to this false recollection being so prominent. Fortunately, we're confident that Mr. Rogers will overlook this error.

15. Observe Us
Throughout our childhood, a helpful park ranger bear would tell us, "Only you can stop forest fires." The renowned brown bear served as the face of the longest-running PSA campaign in US history. But what was his precise name?
Despite the fact that many people may swear he goes by Smokey the Bear, his real name is Smokey Bear. Given how similar they are to one another and how Smokey the Bear does sound more natural, at least this one seems like a reasonably understandable error to make.
@Smokey Bear Says (1995)/Smokey Bear/YouTube.com
16. Lucy must explicate some things
The comedy series I Love Lucy was the first to ever have an ensemble cast, so it's understandable why it was such a cherished program. That's also a contributing factor in why the program is still regarded as one of the most important sitcoms in history.
Another factor is the humor, which was unavoidably contributed by Lucy's propensity for getting into mischief. As a result, the show's catchphrase evolved into "Lucy,' splain," which was spoken by Lucy's husband, Ricky Ricardo. Or was it "Lucy, you have some splaining to do" that was said?
17. We Admire Lucy
The oft-quoted line "Lucy, you have some explaining to do" really never appears in the program. We do wonder if this remark was lifted from Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz's real-life marriage since so much of the program is based on their lives (Lucy and Ricky).
Whether this was based on genuine occurrences or not, Ricky always says, "'Splain it if you can," or "Lucy,'splain," whenever one of Lucy's plans goes awry. At least he didn't explain things to her for her...

18. Castle of Cinderella
The replica of Cinderella's castle in real life has to be one of Disney World's most identifiable structures. When visiting the theme park, you really must see the magnificent structure, whose innovative architecture creates the appearance that it is larger than it actually is! It's fortunate that it's close to the entrance.
But it's not! The castle isn't by the entrance, unlike what many previous guests to Magic Kingdom may have remembered. In reality, it is located just past Main Street. Even Orlando natives who practically grew up in the park swear online that it's at the entrance, so don't feel terrible if you got it incorrect.
19. Clarice
Most people don't typically equate inmates with politeness. However, Hannibal Lecter from The Silence of the Lambs is the epitome of manners and grace as he welcomes Clarice when she approaches him to request his assistance.
It makes sense that so many people cite Clarice and Hannibal's initial conversation. The picture was so wildly successful that it is one of just two films in history to win the five most prestigious Academy Awards (Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Adapted Screenplay).

20. Memory
Many people can still clearly recall his greeting Clarice in that scene. But in reality, he didn't say anything like that! Even if it is still nice, all he says is "Good morning," which doesn't quite have the same recognizable sound, does it?
"Memory Is What I Have Instead of a View" is just one of the many other incessantly quotable lines in the movie (a particular favorite of ours has to do with some beans and a nice drink). So perhaps think about utilizing one of the other memorable lines that helped the movie become so popular rather than misquoting it.

21. The Leo`s Awards
The Oscars committee notably passed over Leonardo DiCaprio for years; despite receiving numerous nominations, he was never awarded. However, some people may have believed he had already received the prized honor before he finally won it in 2016.
At least in our world, this has never occurred. However, others speculate that he might have won an Oscar for his major part in Titanic in an alternative reality. Some folks can even recall watching his acceptance speech on talk shows!
22. Guidance from Gandalf
It comes as practically no surprise that the book that essentially invented a genre served as the inspiration for one of the greatest film productions ever! Everyone who worked on the Lord of the Rings trilogy is said to have poured their hearts into the films because they were such avid readers of the book. Many recall his telling them to “Run, you fools!”
Finding an error in a movie is thus unexpected. However, this example is intriguing because it's not wholly a false recollection. In The Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf advises the gang to flee as he saves them from the Balrog after uttering the famous "You shall not pass."
@Best of Gandalf - Simple acts of Kindness/Panos Topalidis/YouTube.com
23. You Must Remember!
However, he can be heard screaming, "Fly, you fool!" on the DVDs. The reality is that he actually said "Run" in the theatrical version, but "Fly" was afterward added to keep with the book's original line. One puzzle is resolved!
This only serves to highlight how much work the cast and company went into realizing Tolkien's vision. It's probably because of this that it's regarded as one of the most ambitious movies ever made. Did you know that during the course of 14 months, all three films were simultaneously filmed?

24. The End of Radar
This one really has me scratching my head. In one of the show's first seasons of its 11-season run, beloved Colonel Walter "Radar" O'Reilly passed away in an episode that many people still vividly recall.
But that never actually happened! Gary Burghoff starred in the sitcom for eight seasons as the young Radar, one of the main characters. He was even featured departing and returning home in a two-part special for the program. He never, ever passed away on screen.

25. Rhetorical Magic
Ever had a stepmother who was envious and sought to win your affection because she thought you were more attractive than her? No? In Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, a 1937 Disney animated classic, Snow White undoubtedly did.
The first fully conventionally animated feature picture, based on a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, was released. Additionally, it was given a unique Oscar that consisted of one large award and seven smaller ones. Why then have we been misquoting it so frequently?
@Snow White - the Jealous Queen Becomes an Evil Witch/MarkArcana/YouTube.com
26. Inverted image
Which is it then? ‘’Mirror Mirror'' or ‘’Magic Mirror'' on the wall of the Evil Queen? She does inquire, "Magic Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all," despite how most people paraphrase it. The movie doesn't ever use the doubled phrase!
That didn't stop this misquote from becoming a part of popular culture, though. No matter how hard we try to forget it, it seems like "Mirror, Mirror" is here to stay, from Ariana Grande singing the lyric to Lily Collins portraying Snow White in the current version bearing the phrase's name.

27. Cruella's appropriate name
Cruella De Vil: "If she doesn't frighten you, nothing horrible will. The fact that so many individuals are unable to spell the villain's last name correctly scares us.
Therefore, despite the fact that she drives a Seville, her real name is Cruella De Vil. The simplest approach to remember this difficult spelling is to keep in mind that, given that she is devilishly nasty, her name is extremely obvious.

28. Countless “Likes”
Some passages seem quotable without end because, no matter what is going on, they are always pertinent. Without a doubt, Sally Field's well-known Oscar acceptance speech belongs in this category. Can you think of a situation in which the phrase "You like me, you truly like me!" wouldn't be appropriate?
Who doesn't adore Sally Field, really? Her first acting gig was on Gidget in 1965, but it wasn't until 1976's TV movie Sybil—for which she won an Emmy—that she earned her big break. Since then, she's had a remarkable and varied career.

29. It Is Unavoidable
She won her second Academy Award in 1984 for her leading performance in Places in the Heart. Naturally, since then, her acceptance speech has become renowned for being both really sincere and a little over the top. The issue is that it doesn't go exactly how most people recall.
It turns out that she didn't truly say that well-known quote!

30. Claim cheese!
Few paintings have sparked such widespread curiosity and imagination. The renowned Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci has to be among the most well-known of those. Every day, people wait in line to see her because of something about her alluring smile.
The issue is that some people recall that her infamous grin used to be much larger than the faint smile that it appears she is currently sporting. We have no idea as to why. Perhaps they've simply watched too many parodies and spoofs of the original works.
31. Size Counts
Steven Spielberg introduced the first summer blockbuster in 1975, forever altering the movie industry. You can tell that Jaws has become a classic since then by how easily we can all name the theme song by John Williams.
The movie earned several Academy Awards, including Best Sound, Best Original Score, and Best Film Editing, all of which were well-deserved. Therefore, it makes sense that it is still frequently referenced today. Additionally, it means that it has been misquoted countless times.

32. What Kind of Boat Is It Anyway?
We frequently utilize its most well-known phrase, "We're going to need a bigger boat." The issue is that that isn't the line at all. You're going to need a bigger boat, Chief Brody actually states in the film. Although it's a small distinction, we can't help but be picky.
Jaws' most lasting contribution may not even be this line. Evidently, a lot of people attribute their shark phobia to the movie. Sincerity be damned, the worst thing on this boat might not be a little healthy respect for these magnificent creatures.

33. The Flintstones
Who didn't enjoy watching the mishaps and humorous daily antics of this prehistoric family cartoon? The program was undoubtedly one of the more well-liked children's animation programs from the 1960s on. Why do people keep confusing them for The Flinstones or The Flintstones, then?
It makes sense that a prehistoric family would be named after the stone flint, doesn't it? The actual name of the group is Flintstones. This confusion may have arisen because Flinstones is much simpler to say. Simply said, the "t" gets in the way.

34. Play!
One of the most romantic and beautiful films in Hollywood history is Hitting Play Casablanca, which is frequently recognized as such. The romantic movie, which stars Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Pail Henreid, is still regarded as a must-see.
The classic movie, which was adapted from the unproduced stage play Everybody Comes to Rick's, depicts the tale of Rick (Bogart) having to choose between his love for her and assisting her and her husband flee Casablanca. Naturally, it's also eminently quote-worthy, particularly the charming sentence in which Bogart's character requests to hear the music once again.

35. Do People Love Rick?
However, it doesn't quite go as most people quote it to. Play it again, Sam," is not what Rick says. Instead, he merely commands Sam to "Play it." The false statement is so well-known that Woody Allen mistakenly paid homage to it by writing the play Play it Again, Sam.
It's truly astonishing how many iconic lines from popular culture have their roots in this movie. Just recall the last time you heard the phrases "We'll always have Paris," "gather up the regular suspects," or "I hope this is the start of a lovely friendship." since they are all direct products of this incredibly well-known movie!

36. Casting Shadows
What teen's dream comes true? To rock out while your parents are away by gliding on the floor of your living room in nothing but tighty whities, a buttoned-down shirt, and socks, just like Tom Cruise's legendary character does in Risky Business!
The character doesn't actually wear sunglasses in this scene, despite what every single reference and parody of this scene in pop culture has done! However, he does appear in a few additional sequences and on the official movie poster sporting those stylish sunglasses.

37. Field of Forgotten Dreams
Field of Dreams is a fantasy sports movie starring Kevin Costner, for those who only know the quote and have never seen the film. Like many of the movies on this list, Shoeless Joe is really based on a novel.
The story revolves around a farmer's quest to construct a baseball field on his property so that the spirits of baseball's best players can play there. Due to the fact that "Shoeless" Joe Jackson was his late father's preferred player, the main character is particularly fascinated on him.

38. Every building
Tom Hanks was first given consideration for the role of Ray Kinsella, but Kevin Costner ultimately won out. With such a well-known film, it has a propensity to be misquoted, as this list has amply demonstrated. Although the phrase "If you build it, they will come" is frequently used, it is never used in the film. Ray is informed instead that “If you create it, he will come.”
One more interesting tidbit about this special movie: the farm where it was filmed is now a popular tourist destination, with roughly 65,000 visitors annually. The property's owner continuously plants corn there for the visitors and doesn't charge a fee. So it's simple to go back and recreate the situation using the appropriate quote!

39. You are not looking for this droid
It's become challenging to keep track of every single Star Wars production due to the abundance of spinoffs, sequels, and prequels. The original trilogies have nevertheless endured as timeless works of popular culture. This should imply that everyone is familiar with C3PO's appearance.
Evidently not. The worried android can be identified by his golden body. He is not entirely made of gold, though; his right leg is silver. If you don't believe us, check the movies! He has a crimson arm in The Force Awakens, when his color also gradually alters.

40. George The Curious and the Missing Tail
Numerous young children around the world love this endearingly inquisitive African monkey and its mischievous adventures. A four-year-old finds George getting into trouble while having his tail between his legs to be incredibly funny.
Curious George has never had a tail, it turns out. Why do so many people remember him having a tail since the imagined tail does not exist in the novels or the television series? It's like trying to find a tail that doesn't exist for a monkey!

41. Mr. Big Error
One of the more significant television programs of the late 1990s and early 2000s was Sex and the City. All of us young females were envious of Charlotte, Miranda, Samantha, and Carrie's single existence in New York City. Nevertheless, many individuals mispronounce the name.
Many individuals seem to be certain that the program is truly called Sex in the City, including a few journalists from back in the day. This is one alternate recollection that has endured, even though it is patently false.

42. Un-Bear-Able
Since the difference is only one letter, this false memory incident may seem insignificant, but it surely packs an impact. How come we can't genuinely remember if the books about this cute bear family are called The Berenstein Bears or The Berenstain Bears though they were a valued part of our childhood?
The Berenstain Bears are who they say they are, despite the fact that most people will claim they are the Berenstein family. How much of your nostalgia is destroyed by this astounding example?
43. Gremlins
The odd horror film Gremlins has probably been seen by everyone who was born after 1984. For those who haven't seen it, it's about a cute critter that becomes dreadfully terrible if fed after midnight or placed in water. Gremlin Spike serves as the major antagonist. Was it Stripe instead?
Although Spike is the moniker most people associate with the Gremlins' commander, his real name is Stripe. He is named because of the white fur stripe on his head, which makes it rather simple to remember!

44. The purpose of these boots is to walking
Carrie Fisher's golden bikini from Return of the Jedi is among the most well-known outfits she donned as Princess Leia. Although it's an injustice to such a powerful character to recall her for her skimpy attire, regrettably, that's the one that's caused some memory controversy.
So, is she wearing sandals in this scene, or is she walking barefoot? A discussion that is truly confounding But in all honesty, we suspect that in this instance, viewers may have been preoccupied with something else and failed to see Leia's shoes. But in case you were wondering, she's wearing ankle-high boots.

45. Only one winner will be determined!
Fans of the monster genre revere the cult classic King Kong vs. Godzilla. However, despite its widespread appeal, some claim that the film included two distinct endings. In one, Godzilla triumphed, whereas Kong triumphed in the other.
But the truth is that this rumor originated from a sci-fi magazine article that mentioned it having two endings (one for the US and one for Japan). Actually, only Kong made it out alive. Nevertheless, the rumor persisted until it became widely believed.

46. The end is here
Tom Hanks is the star of the much-loved family film Big. That implies that everyone should keep in mind how it ends, right? It appears that many people don't. There may have been an additional scene in the film where Josh returns to school and runs into his then-adult lover.
Naturally, this never occurs in the film. But that did happen in a movie from the same era called 14 Going on 30, which had a very similar plot (not to be confused with 13 Going on 30 starring Jennifer Garner). Even so, some claim to have seen this scenario in Big!

47. Tail
Why are the targets of false recollections invariably the timeless works from our youth? One hypothesis is that the more we mentally replay nostalgic events, the more the actual memory is distorted and altered.
Snoopy's tail is either a thin black line or a more obvious white triangle. The truth is that Snoopy has had a white tail that moves and even has a tiny black spot at the base since the 1950s, when the comic strip first began.

48. Placing a Ring on It
Despite the fact that people like making fun of it, Dora the Explorer was a mainstay of kids' educational television in the 2000s. The variety of entertaining animal characters that Dora encounters on her journeys added to its appeal. One, though, was misremembered.
Since he is an animal, many people recall Benny the Bull having a nose ring. But he never truly has one in the show. We believe that in this instance, assumptions based on character may have been made.

49. Where is Carmen Sandiego's coat in the world?
In one of the most well-known educational video games, kids who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s had the good fortune to learn geography, math, and history from the world's greatest thief. However, many people were unaware of the color of Carmen's enigmatic trench coat.
Many individuals definitely recall her wearing a yellow coat at some point, either in the game, on the program, or in both, even though everyone now believes that it is blood red. Carmen's only color, however, in our perception of reality, is red.

50. In Forrest Gump we trust
Did you know that Winston Groom's book served as the inspiration for Forrest Gump? Even a sequel called Gump & Co. that makes reference to the Tom Hanks movie exists! Isn't it true that life is full of surprises?
But getting back to the movie, how sweet was it when Forrest Gump informed us that "Life is like a box of chocolates" and shared his mother's advice with unrelated strangers? It might be "Life was like a box of chocolates," instead.
